Three people were killed in a crash involving two vehicles on Highway 26 near Buxton Thursday night, according to Oregon State Police.

At 10:10 p.m., troopers and emergency personnel responded to the crash, which happened near milepost 42 between the Vernonia turnoff and the tunnel.

OSP said preliminary findings indicate a gray 2014 Kia Cadenza was traveling eastbound on the highway when it crossed the centerline for an unknown reason. The Kia collided head-on into a westbound red 2010 Lexus HS 250.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the Kia, was killed.

Two of the four occupants of the Lexus - the driver and the left rear passenger - were also killed. The other two occupants - the front passenger and the right rear passenger - were flown to a Portland area hospital. The extent of their injuries was not released and their conditions are not known.

OSP said speed and lane occupancy were determined to be contributing factors in the crash.
