A Portland architecture firm has released renderings for a planned development downtown that would include the tallest building on the West Coast.
The plans released Tuesday from William/Kaven Architecture would go up on the site of the soon-to-be-demolished U.S. Postal Service distribution center and feature approximately 5 million square feet of space in multiple towers.
The tallest two central towers, one of which would be more than 970 feet tall, would also be joined by a glass-enclosed botanical bridge 680 feet in the air spanning 236 feet across the North Park Blocks.
The mix-used buildings would include space for retail shops, offices and hotels, as well as residential space.
“The towers are large enough to serve as a headquarters for a Fortune 100 company, such as Amazon, and would anchor the entire district both architecturally and financially,” William/Kaven founder Daniel Kaven said. “The towers and interlinking skybridge would be an iconic addition to Portland’s skyline and a destination for locals and tourists alike. The elevated garden would be a tropical respite from the gray of the city at any time of the year and provide breathtaking views of Mt. Hood and the entire city skyline."
In addition to the buildings, the company state the development would also include plans for a transportation hub that could include possible underground and high-speed rail. It would also be in the vicinity of Union Station’s Amtrak and Greyhound services and TriMet lines.
The company stated the plans are still in the preliminary stages and its final proposal has not yet been submitted to Prosper Portland, the city’s economic and urban development agency.
Prosper Portland bought the site as part of a larger Broadway Corridor development project. The window for submission of development proposals opened earlier this month and will run through April.
