Video shows cougar prowling around Hood River

Some young men in Hood River got into a high speed chase over the weekend with a cougar.

In an exclusive interview with FOX 12, Evan McClure said he and two of his coworkers were driving back from providing party supplies at a late night event.

It was around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday when McClure said they had a brush with wildlife.

“We saw something and the driver at the time, Andrew, said, ‘I think that’s a coyote!’ And I thought, ‘Oh, a coyote! I don’t see those a lot,’” he said. “So we started chasing it a bit.”

McClure started shooting video on his cell phone, but the trio soon realized it was no coyote. It was a cougar sprinting alongside their truck.

In the video, McClure can be heard shouting, “A big cat! Just a really big cat!” in total disbelief of what he was seeing.

The video then shows the cougar run up to a fence, at which point McClure accidentally stopped recording. After that, he said the cat crashed into the fence, then turned around and came after them.

“My coworker’s window was down and it goes up and tries to like, claw at us!”, said McClure. “We’re like, ‘Oh my god! Roll up the windows right now. We need to get out of here!’”

The big cat disappeared and the three guys called police.

Hood River is flanked by forests, but officials said cougar sightings are still extremely rare in the area. McClure said he will never forget that rare moment or how he felt.

“A little of bit of everything, to be honest,” he said. “But more just excited to get the opportunity to see a cougar.”
