Winterhawks fans help make the holiday brighter with toy drive donations

It's hard to believe, but Christmas is just over three weeks away, and Saturday FOX 12 and Les Schwab tire Centers teamed up with the Portland Winterhawks and their fans to make the holidays a little brighter for some local kids.

Patrick Nickelson is one of several Winterhawks fans who donated toys for the FOX 12 Les Schwab Tire Centers Toy Drive knowing the joy it will bring in just a few short weeks.

“I think every kid should have a chance to have a bright Christmas and have toys under the tree when they wake up Christmas Day,” he said.

Little Heatheranne Lee also wanted to share the love this Christmas season.

“A lot of kids don't have toys,” she said. “Donating to this drive gives them to kids who don't."

Even though the Winterhawks didn't pull off a win, the toy drive is proving to be a success.

The Portland Winterhawks tweeted that over 3,100 toys were collected at the game.

Update: we collected 3,106 toys during @LesSchwab / @fox12oregon Toy Drive! Thanks #Hawks fans for making a difference this holiday season! https://t.co/tVBgkgSTxR— Portland Winterhawks (@pdxwinterhawks) December 4, 2016

"This is a great opportunity to be part of something bigger than what you could do by yourself,” Howard Magden from Les Schwab Tire Centers said.

There is still time to donate to the toy drive. Just bring a new, unwrapped toy to any Les Schwab Tire Center location, Columbia Credit Union or the FOX 12 studios. For more information, visit the Toy Drive page on KPTV.com.

Good Day Oregon's Tony Martinez was also at the game to encourage generous giving, and drop the puck.
