(Meredith) — Police said a driver hit and killed a 6-year-old girl while she was waiting to board a school bus in Wisconsin with her 4-year-old sister.

The crash happened along Highway 73 near Plainfield just after 7 a.m. Monday, WLUK-TV reported.

According to the Tri-County School District, the bus was stopped with its lights flashing when another vehicle struck the two children. The vehicle was traveling in the same direction as the bus.

The 6-year-old girl died at the scene, and her little sister sustained minor injuries.

The Waushara County Sheriff's Department is investigating, but it hasn't released any details about the vehicle's driver.

The school district later released the following statement, according to WLUK-TV:

District counselors, support personnel from Waushara County Crisis Team, and additional counselors from the Wautoma School District have been available throughout the day to aid students and staff in processing this heartbreaking event.

The District would like to offer sincere gratitude to the numerous school districts who reached out to extend their condolences, many of whom also offered to lend counseling support to our students and staff if needed.
