Beaverton High School sweethearts from the ’80s gifted their old locker
BEAVERTON Ore. (KPTV) -The Beaverton School District surprised a husband and wife who met at Beaverton High School in the ’80s with their old locker on Wednesday. The gift comes ahead of the original Beaverton High School building’s scheduled demolition in early 2027.
Christine and Robert Huseby began dating during their senior year in 1983. Robert was a star on the basketball team. Christine was a bookworm who went on to win the 1984 Outstanding Senior Home Economics Award.
Soon, the two were head over heels, and locker No. 1241 became their spot. It was the place they’d meet between classes, share a laugh and leave each other love letters or treats.
“He left me a chocolate chip cookie with a note when we very first started going out. That’s the cookie story!” Christine said.
After standing for more than a century, the original Beaverton High School building closed its doors this summer due to aging infrastructure.
Students began classes in the new high school building next door on SW Farmington Road this fall.
FOX 12 cameras were at the original building in May during the final alumni tour. The Husebys thought they were seeing their locker for the last time, but the school district made other plans.
“We saw FOX 12’s story back in May about the folks that went to the high school, and that part really caught me,” said Jeff Hamman, senior project manager at the Beaverton School District. “I was like, well, we should take that locker, salvage it and give it to that couple.”
Hamman and his team developed a plan to gift the locker to the Husebys.
Their daughter, Rebecca, was looped into the surprise and tasked with convincing her parents to drive into town from their home in Nehalem.
“They had no idea who, what, when. I’m just like, ‘I need you guys to come into town to do a thing. Can’t tell you what it is.’ From the look on their faces, it was worth it,” Rebecca said.
The Husebys received the locker on the Beaverton High School campus Wednesday afternoon.
Christine gasped in disbelief when she learned of their new keepsake. Robert went straight to work, trying to crack the locker’s combination.
Christine’s father and grandfather, along with the couple’s two daughters, are all Beaverton High School alumni.
The couple hopes to pass the locker down to future generations.
“I hope they really enjoy it, and when they see it, it reminds them of the time that they were here and their initial love story,” Hamman said.
The original Beaverton High School is already undergoing interior demolition. The building is expected to begin coming down in November, with full demolition expected in February or March 2027.
