PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Portland police confirmed Tuesday that police gunfire hit and mortally wounded police dog Kylo during a deadly confrontation last week in southeast Portland.

Emergency veterinary workers later euthanized the 6-year-old dog due to his injuries. Thursday was set to be Kylo’s final shift before retirement.

The bureau identified the man killed in the shooting as Eddie Brandon Todd Campbell, 39, of Portland. Police said Campbell died at the scene near a hotel during an encounter with officers and U.S. Marshals.

The case began around 7 a.m. Thursday, when officers responded to a welfare check at a home near Southeast Market Street and Southeast 182nd Avenue. Inside, they found 60-year-old Jeff Thompson shot to death. Detectives then used public safety cameras and license plate readers to find Campbell.

Police Chief Bob Day said investigators know police gunfire wounded Kylo, but officials have not yet confirmed which law enforcement agency fired the shot.

“We continue to honor the heroic efforts of Kylo or the devastating loss his death represents to our Bureau members and our community,” Chief Bob Day said in the written release. “We appreciate the outpouring of support from throughout the city—and even the country—as we work through this heartbreaking loss.”

Per bureau rules, Portland police plan to release officer names and body camera video within 14 days.
