PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - Multnomah County elections officials on Friday said the U.S. Department of Justice plans to send election monitors to the county.

In a statement, Multnomah County Elections and Elections Director Tim Scott said the office is committed to transparency and routinely hosts monitors and community members of all political affiliations and backgrounds to observe staff and volunteers.

Officials said election monitors, whether from the federal government or not, are supposed to follow local rules and procedures, including not interfering with elections work, the statement said. Officials said they expect federal partners to follow observer procedures like any other group.

“We welcome election observers and support transparency and a proud tradition of holding open, accessible, secure and reliable elections,” the statement said. “We will continue to reinforce trust in a system that has proven itself time and time again.”
