PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Governor Tina Kotek released new data on Oregon’s latest housing development numbers on Wednesday.

The report shows nearly 14,000 affordable housing units have been financed or opened with state support since January 2023.

Kotek’s office says more than 40,000 more are in the works.

The governor says the goal is to give every Oregonian the freedom to live in a home that they can afford.

However, the day before, state leaders said Oregon is still nowhere near building enough homes to meet the growing demand.

“I don’t know if we will ever get out of it. Maybe we will come close to having a small number that is needed, but right now we are running against the clock trying to catch up,” said Roberto Franco, deputy director Oregon Housing and Community services.

Kotek had previously set a goal of building 36,000 homes a year, to keep up with population growth. That number has now been adjusted to just under 30,000, as a result of an annual reassessment.
