STANDISH, Maine (Gray News) — A kindergartner in Maine was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a school bus, according to WMTW.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened less than half a mile from Edna Libby Elementary School in Standish, which is about 30 minutes west of Portland. The school is in the Bonny Eagle School District.

The student, identified as 5-year-old Simon Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office told WMTW that only one other student was on the bus at the time of the crash. That student is Simon’s half-brother, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said.

Officials are still investigating exactly what happened.
