SALINAS, Calif. (KSBW) - A northern California couple is warning parents to check their toddler’s drinks when dining out.

The family said their toddler was mistakenly served alcohol at a restaurant, leading to a trip to the emergency room.

They said a server accidentally gave their child wine at Fujiyama, a Japanese restaurant in Salinas, California.

KSBW talked to the manager, who said the whole thing was a mistake.

They said the wine served came from a container of cooking wine that was labeled as apple juice.

“She was swaying, she was falling over, she was leaning on the walls, she couldn’t hold her head up, she was slurring her words,” Noemi Valencia, the toddler’s mother, said.

The parents knew something was very wrong. So, they tasted it and knew that it wasn’t apple juice.

They rushed her to the emergency room and found out their 2-year-old was drunk.

In fact, they said he had a blood alcohol of 0.12, well above the legal limit to drive.

They’re hoping the restaurant learns from the mistake.

“Take proper precautions and how you store things or, label things properly so that this doesn’t happen to anybody else or, you know, it could have been so much worse,” Valencia said.

The little girl has since fully recovered.

Valencia urges parents to taste what’s served to their kids.

Meanwhile, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said it’s aware of the incident and is working with local authorities to investigate.
