1 dead, 1 arrested following deadly shooting in rural Clark County

CLARK COUNTY Wash. (KPTV) - The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says a 73-year-old man is dead and a suspect is in custody after a deadly shooting late Monday morning.

Around 11:15 a.m., authorities were called to the scene of a reported “assault with a firearm” near the intersection of Northeast Ward Road and Northeast Davis Road in rural Clark County, near Orchards, Wash.

Upon arrival, deputies found one person, identified as 73-year-old Gary R. Bender, dead inside a home.

The sheriff’s office says witnesses reported Bender and the shooting suspect alone inside the home prior to the incident.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Brian E. Kangas of Battle Ground, was reportedly seen leaving the area on a bicycle.

Deputies arrested Kangas near the intersection of NE 182nd Avenue and Risto Road just before 11:45 a.m. on Monday. Kangas was allegedly carrying a handgun a the time of his arrest.

The shooting remains under investigation.
